A Cultural History of the Korean House

The most notable characteristic that distinguishes Korean houses from those in other countries is the ondol, and its derivatives. Ondol is a unique floor heating system made of pipes connected to a fireplace that sends smoke under the floor. Even the modern transformation of Korean houses has greatly been influenced by the improvement of ondol. This book introduces the history of Korean housing from ancient times to the present, divided into several historical periods. It also provides an overview of the future of Korean housing in the transition from a patriarchal to a nuclear family-oriented society, and the status of apartments, which have become a representative type of Korean housing.
